I think FCobra94 has hit the nail on head. There is likely enough information in this group to start filling in some of the basic information. As to actual speed tests based on lap times, perhaps we can get GRM to do an updated study (or set up our own track day test!)

I think the base case for an E90 or later "performance" application is the 17 x 8 square rims with a 225/45-17. I think the next size up would be 255/40-17 on an 8" wide rim, then 255/40-17 on a 9" wide rim, then the 18" and 19" rim/tire combinations. Rim offset should also be noted as it impacts on handling, clearance, and aesthetics.

I think it would be interesting to know the lightest OEM rims in each size, the Apex rim weights in each size, and other readily available light weight rims which are reasonably priced. I also think some comments on durability for daily use is pertinent.

Another factor that is frequently not discussed is the size of brake upgrade that can fit inside a certain rim. Working from OEM configurations, front rotors could be 300-380 mm in diametre. Some OEM rims will fit over a brake set up while the same size OEM riim in a different style will rub on a caliper.

The use of spacers should be noted as this will impact on brake clearance, but will also impact handling, wear on bearings and aesthetics.
