There is a service bulletin out on this one. It happened to me twice. A real pain in the butt. By the second time the bulletin was out. I believe it had to do with a faulty gas cap door lock that was shorting out the system. I think they ended up replacing all the switches on mine by the time they were done.
The scary part was when I was inside and could not get out! The only way I could lock the right side doors was to do it manually, and once that was done there was no way to unlock them from the inside or out. The driver's door can be unlocked manually with the key, but if your doors lock once you are inside then the only way out is to unlock the driver's door by reaching out the window and unlock it manually.
The fob did work to unlock the hatch on my E91 and my 8 year old loved getting into the back seat that way.
