I also have a Subaru. After having my BMW in for a tire repair, I asked my SA about this issue. He claims the BMW's AWD system is less sensitive to tire wear than Subaru's AWD. He also said that he'd replace all 4 on the BMW if there was more than 30% wear, or about 10,000 miles (even on my Sub, I had to replace all 4, not just the front 2). So, you should be OK just tossing a new one on with just 3,000 miles.
