Actually no, it is a life cycle. They design the base motor then uptune it as the life cycle moves along. You will see the N55 outperform the N54 in the future, just right now for economies of scale and the vetted testing of the motor the N55 is at one set level- the N54 did the same thing. The N54 has been upped in the 740s, the BMW Performance Kit and now the "iS" versions. When the N54 launched in 2007 there was only one version.... the same can be said about the N55- and as I have said before the N55 will be tuned and it is currently undergoing engineering and testing in several forms which will should debut in 2011....
