Just my 2 cents.
I have a 2011 335i. The rear differential started to make a loud nose. My Indy shop said I may need a new, but wanted to change the fluid in the differential first. After the fluid change, the nose was highly reduced and disappeared altogether about 1500 miles later.
So I would change the differential fluid before anything else.
