Yes, it replaces your bluetooth module.
So it gives you bluetooth hands free, bluetooth music streaming with controls from idrive/steering weel and media info on the screen, when connected via cable it also gives you internet on your idrive, BMW apps like web radio, spotify, weather etc. When connected via cable you also get album art on the idrive screen and you can browse the playlists and other media on your phone from the idrive. combox also reads your phones actual call log where other bluetooth modules only display calls that were made through the idrive.
