I think I've fixed it! Very pleased.
1) Unpair on both sides
2) Re-pair the phone again
3) On the car side, it will ask if you want audio and phone for this device - do NOT choose both. Choose audio only - so take the tick box OFF the phone.
With this I got a very stable and reliable bluetooth connection, no more disconnects. I drove around for a long time with Spotify working very well.
Later that day I felt lucky - I went into bluetooth device config on the car, and enabled the phone check box. And wow - both now working fine.
So it seems the trick is not to pair with both audio and telephone selected at the same time.
What I have not yet tried is to sync my contacts - I did read on another forum a report that a contact that has the "+" character in a contact number breaks the system and leads to pain and suffering. I don't know if that's true, or if if the UPD01008 software fixes that. I'm going to leave it as is for a while as lots of my contact numbers have that character in it...
