I had a similar problem with my 320d, but the car completely died on me...
I tested the injectors they were good, replaced the fuel filter, checked the fuel pumps they were working.. then replaced the HFPF still didn't fix the problem.
After a little bit of research I swapped back the original fuel filter then checked the pressure that was coming from the pumps, it was around 3,5 bar... when it should have had 6-8bar anyway the plastics connectors that connect to the pumps weren't connected all the way when I snapped them back on car started up immediately.
My guess would be that it's either something with the fuel filter(don't buy cheap ones) because some of them let fuel either way or something to with the injectors/HPFP also it would be worth checking the rail it self, there might be something wrong with it electronically
