Read through the forum to get an idea of what maintenance you should do and what repairs the car might require in the future so you can budget for them.

I open the hood on my vehicles once a week just to look things over. While this is probably more than most people, I find it allows me to get a good idea of things that may need to be addressed in the future (low fluid levels, leaks, belt condition, etc) before they cause an issue.
