You are probably correct in the etymology of the word in this context. In the commonwealth however,(not Virginia, but Australia, NZ etc) the term gyp refers to pain - as in "my elbow is giving me gyp (or gip)"

An alternate meaning isa slang term for an Egyptian that can be traced back to Lord Kitchener's army in Egypt in the 1880s and 1890s -"gyppy" or "gippy."
