I agree with you and i would imagine that the bits you had done would still have been covered. My friend did the same as you and removed it before it went in, BMW plugged it in found that it had been mapped and printed out a statement on what had been voided in the warranty.
And this is the problem, it would only ever get highlighted if you needed to make a claim now however they are looking for it and then voiding those parts regardless if its failed.
