It would be to change the software that manages the gearbox, this changes how quickly it changes gear, when it changes vs throttle position, how aggressively it downshifts etc..
Changing these parameters can transform the character of the gearbox and ultimately the car.
Many manufacturers use the same gearbox in a multitude of vehicles yet, they can all feel completely different depending on how they are "flashed".
