I could be wrong here, but I think you would still have a functional vehicle. P-R-N-D engagement is achieved mechanically through a linkage of levers and a cable. All of the wiring in the shifter assembly merely communicates to the instrument cluster the selected drive mode. In the case of DS or M mode being selected, further communication is enabled to allow the driver to send an electronic signal (by pulling on a paddle or moving the selector handle) to the transmission control unit (or whatever it's called) which effects the engagement of the forward drive gears.
