Doesn't sound that far fetched - If he works at the dealer, may well have picked it up cheap to drive while his other cars were being fixed and he's now moving it on?
My Dad is doing something similar with a Hyundai Getz right now - his 4wd dropped a rod, since he still needs to get around he picked up a cheap runabout to drive while he fixes the 4wd. Once that's fixed, he'll offload the Hyundai - probably within a similar timeframe.
Much cheaper than hiring a car in the interim.
