It's only one or two steps more on a Mac. I used my MacBook as well, all you have to do is install a parallels virtual machine with a 32bit windows.
There's an entire forum dedicated to coding BMWs, I'll send you a PM with some links you might find helpful if you decide to go this route.
I'll admit, the first time I had my car coded by someone at their house (Casper) was his forum name I believe. But after I got a new head unit installed by the dealer, I lost a lot of my coding functionalities and decided to try it myself.
I'll state once again that the setup and learning curve is fairly steep. But I feel he benefit outweighs that.
I've only heard great things about the guys on the forum offering coding services, go with them if you want to just sit back and watch the pros do it.
