Not 100% necessary, but highly advisable - otherwise you will have spillage and you have to be careful not to cross-contaminate coolant/oil. In the original DIY I showed how to drain/save the coolant and then filter and re-use it. That was for an auto transmission. With a manual you have to remove the radiator or something - someone posted the details in one of the comments.
