I'm about to do this on my '08 (manual trans sport pkg, w/ oil cooler). DIYs like this have been invaluable, thanks to all those who've contributed!

The problem is that my leak is bad enough that I have some "milkshake" collecting on the underside of the oil cap. I think the coolant is mixing with the oil.

Question 1: how should I flush the cooling system?

I've done some searches, and some have said they flushed with a bit of dish detergent. However, I'm concerned that residual detergent left in the system might deteriorate seals and gaskets, leading to leaks down the line.

I've seen some mention of a special coolant "flush". Not sure if this is a special fluid or what... could someone who's done this chime in?

Question 2: how should I flush the engine?

I'm thinking that a couple of oil changes should be enough to get the coolant out of the engine. But BMW oil is expensive! Do I really need to use this to flush? Is flushing the engine oil really necessary?

TIA!!
