Overheating issue with bmw

Hi guys just had a trouble with the bmw on the highway. Driving like usual and I got greeted with a amber engine warning light and then straight to red warning light and the engine started stalling. gave it half hour to cool down and then within 5 minutes the light came back on. topped up coolant straight away but realised the cooolant was not that hot before i topped up.

After a lot of reading two possible reasons i can think of is water pump and thermostat. would just swopping them with new will solve the problem or would i need to remap the ecu and stuff.

any info will help.

thanks
