The failure of the pump IS NOT related to the impeller. The impeller is plastic, but it is small, about the size of a half-dollar coin, and made of ABS plastic that is suitable to high temperature operation. The impeller and motor do not fail. The electronic components that control the motor fail. For some reason, BMW decided to put the control electronics on the back of the motor housing (instead of a separate housing somewhere in the car in a less hard environment) where they are constantly in high temperatures, which eventually leads to failure.
