I have planted Dichondra repens or kidney grass, in my garden for a year and a half now. Because mowing is not essential with this type of grass i have chosen this type. It grows beautifully, and my kid loves it. Plant this kind of grass and you will never look back. Trust me. I paid 50 euros in seeds and that was it.
If dichondra is sown in a sunny condition, with medium traffic, it is a ground hugging, tight cover. In shadier conditions with less traffic it may reach 15cm.
All of my friends who saw the outcome of this, they all want to remove their "normal" turf and replace it with Dichondra. Np hassles and it keeps your graden green all year round.
