There is no logical reason to conclude that 29.2 would affect gas mileage. Unless drivers are responding to the reduction of power response at low revs by a heavier foot -- and maybe this can result in fouling spark plugs, leading to inefficient burn, and perhaps even backfiring as in Pavel's case.
