I have an AT, but i've had to fix a broken DS mode and that was simply a couple overstressed wires that were too thin and either broke or their jackets wore off. That makes me kind of think it's a short/bad wire.
Just speculation though. Either way it's not hard to pop the center console off and look....that's where all those wires are for an AT anyway.
