The N54 has the same dimensions as the N52 block but the bolt pattern is different for the transmission. N54 uses a steel forged crank. N52 uses a cast iron version.

And one very important thing: N54 engine block is made of all aluminium with iron cylinder liners compared to N52's aluminium/magnesium block.
Looks like BMW made a very reliable turbo engine.
