Yeah it's usually RFT's that cause the problem.

Supplying the car new with those tyres was probably another dim decision taken by the BMW accounts department rather than engineering.
Win / win for BMW as they got to save money on the car they sold you by not supplying a spare wheel and tools with which to fit it and every 6 months they got to sell you a brand new alloy wheel(s) because you had buggered the ones on your car.
Even my Porsche had a space saver spare wheel which had a strange collapsable tyre on it so when stored it was not much bigger than the wheel diameter itself. They also provided an aluminium jack and wheel brace and a mini compressor that run from the cigarette lighter socket to inflate the tyre when needed and that was a car with aluminium suspension components and magnesium wheels as standard so it is nothing to do with weight saving!
If you are buying the wheels second hand check the tyres that are fitted. If they are non-RFT and still inflated then the wheels are probably ok.
