Just get an inexpensive multimeter. What I would suggest to do is as follows:
Disconnect the lights, or better just the AE bulb ( or cable) and see if the error goes away. Then, measure the voltage between ground and pin 1 (AE). Also, I would suggest to compare resistance ( ohm meter) on both lights AFTER disconnecting them. Measure between pins 1 and ground ( with and without bulb but WITHOUT POWER CONNECTED!!!!)
This way we should be able to see if the unit is even trying to power the AE and also if you have short in the housing.
