Clean and protect

I want to clean and protect.

My black Dakota leather is in my 2006 325xi and is in good shape. It is 13 years old as my production date is Oct 2005. I will try my furniture products on a small area first. I would like to the soften the leather as it is 13 years old

Is there anyone who knows what type of leather Dakota is? I think it is probably semi aniline with a protective coating.
Based on comments on this blog, this coating will keep oil based products from penetrating. However, water based products can penetrate.
This makes no sense to me as polymers would prevent any solution from penetrating as they do on clearcoat/paint.

Thanks
