No need to have it serviced at a bmw garage, however, it needs to have been serviced at a VAT registered garage and have the service book stamped. Although it helps to build a relationship with the dealer so they will fight your corner. I have had quite a bit of work through the warranty, including a new gearbox and catalytic converters. It's only these big jobs they question the one independent stamp I have which I back up with a receipt. They have paid out for all reasonable things you would expect to be covered, including oil leaks, so it's worth it. Just make sure the service history is in order.
