yeah UK law states that unless you are the military, it is illegal to shoot down any kind of aircraft, including a drone.
I wonder if a catapult would side-skirt that law.
I've seen quite a bit of stuff on that drone. There are theories that the drone (which there don't seem to be an official pictures or video of) was an excuse for the airport to close. i.e. A computer f up meant no planes could fly and so they made up the drone story to cover their asses. Same thing happened at Birmingham airport.
Unless you can see Gatwick in the background then a picture of a drone in the sky, could be from anywhere.
