BMW already has experience with building 3 cylinder motors, albeit on a motorcycle. I had a 1989 K75S, which was a 3 cylinder version of the larger K100. They used a counterweight to make up for the odd number of pistons, and the resulting engine was surpassingingly smooth, which mattered a lot in a motorcycle. I don't know how well it will translate to a car though.
