Works like this: Air goes into the airbox, then passes thru the charcoal filter, then into the replaceable filter, then into the engine.
The charcoal filter is there to capture backflow from the engine when it's shut down, ie fuel vapors or mist from the PCV system.
I don't know why it's worth putting it in there, even my wife's 2010 Accord V6 doesn't even have it.
