BMW engines are not necessarily fragile, but do have weaknesses. The N54 being a prime example.

The reliability is part of the reason I've had 6 bmws and not one of them had any engine problems at all. Not a coil pack or a turbo or anything.
Reading this forum it sounds like I've bought a lemon !
