Diesel engines dont have throttles. That valve sits completely open once the engines running, and is only used to cut airflow to the engine when you turn it off so it stops smoothly.

On a diesel, all the "throttle pedal" does is requests more fuel, the airflow thru the engine doesnt matter and diesels will happily run very lean.

A petrol on the other hand requires the perfect mixture of air and fuel, so when driving along normally at low load, the throttle plate limits the airflow into the engine according to your pedal position.

It may well be that the process still does some "reset" within the ECU ofcourse.
