That said, I think that was at roughly the same time as BMW's rec for N54s changed from LL-01 to LL-01 FE.

Problem with current LL01 spec. is that it bumped oxidation requirements to such levels that 0W oils due to natural acidity are not faring well. However, that does not have anything to do with older engines.
I would not use LL01FE in my vehicle if someone offered me for free for lifetime.
And yes, BITOG is up to date with this.
