You need a base level coding to prep your car for the install, then the install, then the coding for satellite radio. If your car is newer, you may have the base software already, but the only way to know is to take it to BMW first, and tell them you are doing a sat radio install. BMW made me disconnect everything and put it back to factory default to do the first upgrade, then I reconnected and got the sat coding.
