It does. BMW uses the line out from the dock connector and the iPod DAC if I'm not mistaken. It was designed this way because of the DRM on iTunes music purchases pretty much required the iPod to do the digital to audio conversion. It was after Apple dropped DRM that the Combox came out (2011MY, post Sept 2010 builds) allowing just the USB cable only and eliminating the need for the special Y cable.
Feel free to correct anything I'm mistaken about.
