I would top up with the same oil if you have it. I wasn't able to, since mine happened on a late night drive home from work, and the local gas station didn't have the BMW LL-01 stuff - just synthetic 5W-30.
I was, however, scheduled for an oil change a few days later, so I didn't think it would harm it too much.
I'd buy the proper replacement stuff if you have access to it, for sure. But in a pinch, synthetic 5W-30 should be OK temporarily.
