BC racing coilover shock body adjustment

Installed my BC Coilovers today on my 2011 335xi. The thing I was unsure about was how to determine the length of the shock bodies in both front and rear. Does anyone know the procedure for determining the shock body length?

Also, In the front, I installed the driver side by bolting the 3 top hat studs first. initially the end link was too short to reach the mounting hole on the shock body so I had to unbolt at the top hats, lower the coilover, install endlink, then jack up and re-bolt the top hats. Is this normal? I'm worried this will change how my front sway bar should behave...

Thanks.
