Can't you just press and hold the iDrive knob to the right to get to navigation menu? I have been doing this the last few weeks, and it works well. Same goes for the other main menu options (left for Climate, down for Entertainment, and up for Communication). Just hold the knob in the respective position for a few seconds and the menu will come up.
