Open the oil fill cap, then turn the oil filter cap slowly till you just hear it starting to suck in some air.

You can then hear the oil draining out from the filter housing into the oil pan

After a couple seconds it stops, and you can then completely unscrew the filter and remove it

I then undo the drain bolt and clean up the filter housing

I then replace the filter and wait for the oil to stop draining out the bottom.



The BMW instructions to the dealers is to open up the filter first, before lifting the car and opening the drain plug.
