I have OE paddles and they will work in D, using them just gives a temporary override, if you drive normally and don't touch them again for about 30 seconds they go back to full auto, or you can give the right paddle a long pull to do the same.
I very seldom bother with the paddles because they're only ever in the correct position to use if your driving on a straight road, if you turn the wheel more than 90° you suddenly find the paddles are in the wrong position to change gear again, they're a novelty that quickly wears off
