The central locking button, is designed to lock the car when you are inside it. It will NOT lock the doors if the drivers door is open (so that you don't lock your keys in). You also cannot push the drivers doorlock knob down when the drivers door is open.
If you want to lock your car without the key, get in from the passenger side, lock the doors via the central locking button, open the passenger door, get out - push the knob (The black thing that pops up when you open the door) down and close the door.
Car is now locked.
