You are absolutely correct. MCG (Mech Commander Gold) was an expansion pack for the first Mech Commander. It added 6-8 new mechs to both IS and CLAN as well as new maps and a plethora or new weapons.
New Mechs:
IS: Mauler (85 tons, assault)
IS: Stiletto (35 tons, light)
CLAN: Turkina (100 tons, assault)
CLAN: Shadowcat (45 tons, Medium)
CLAN: Nova Cat (75 tons, Heavy)
I can't remember the rest off the top of my head atm. These were the heavy hitters though.
New weapons include:
IS: sm/med/lrg X-pulse lasers
BOTH: Long Tom Artillery
CLAN: LBX AC Lt/Med/Hvy (5/10/20)
And...
BOTH: The RAIL GUN. (Headshot = instagib)
Most of the few poeple I find randomly playing play only MCG now, since its basically an enhanced version of MC. If you interested in playing check out

It is privately owned and run by fans of the series still, and you can download the game there legally via torrents. There are forums as well though the community is small.
