I've personally retrofitted my Idrive into a non idrive e90 I went from a 2rad to cic and retrofitted from MULF2 to Combox
The features aren't really needed it's just more of CIC plugged in and running Winkfp with the correct addresses regardless of the VO's so it should work.
Not sure what you mean by running the donor vin? I have the donor vin when I did the 2017 maps and have the emulator that's about it.
