Ignition Random Cut Out

I have an e92 325i 2008. I was sitting in the car today in a car park with the ignition on (not the engine) listening to the radio when suddenly everything died. After unlatching and reinserting the fob it started without a problem.
Is this a design feature to safeguard against accidently leaving the ignition on, or would it be something more sinister? I wouldn't like to worry it might happen whilst driving. I've had the battery cable problem fixed (re-called) causing everything to die but I can't imagine it would fail under such a small load in any case. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
