I find that even with optimizaton and distortion correction, sometimes people's faces still don't look very flattering especially near when far from the center. As a results i try not to get too wide with the people photos (especially group photos), at 24mm though i'm a lot safer than say at the 16mm end of an UWA. For everything else though, UWA zooms and useful walkarounds like the 24-105 and 24-70 are excellent for just about anything you can throw at them.
