Thanks. Just in case anyone is wondering why I did it the way I did...its because my car is leased so I didn't want to do anything that couldn't be easily undone at the end of the lease. If you own your car you could do a better job by cutting the plug off and splicing the feed to the socket.
There are also a couple of alternative socket types available from Radio Shack to provide different kinds of outlets. Here they are:
