I'm gonna make myself unpopular here......

I'm not a fan of our tax-happy government at all, least of all Brown, BUT...how else do you encourage people to pick more sensible cars?

I'm really not in favour of more fuel duty (the other way) as you can't avoid paying it although it does take usage into consideration. At least with VED, you have a choice you can choose a car that has a better banding, which is what we need people to do. Truth is, the car companies will react anyway and start to produce the cars that we want at lower banding. e.g. more ED cars.

Too many people don't think about the CO2 performance of their cars, this is a way to at least make them aware of it.

Yes it means that some cars will depreciate more and that's unfortunate. But can you think of another way?

I also don't think he'll do anything daft like raise the £400 to £1000, what he might do it say that he higher bands will increase at a higher than inflation rate from now on (say 10%) giving the market and people time to react to a predicable change.
