Cast wheels aren't always heavier. It all depends on the manufacturing process, like spun cast. Forged wheels have a denser metal and is heavier per square inch, but then you can make the material thinner to lighten the wheel without sacrificing strength.
There's even a difference in forged wheels. Look at the difference in weights of the HRE P43 and the Volk TE37.
