Went with the Golf R for a few years myself. Liked the performance (with a JB4) and the hatch for extra interior room for the dogs if we had to bring them anywhere, but wasn't fond of the noise it made, nor the turbo lag but it was a fun car to drive around. Comfortable but also handled really well.
