Gutted for you m8, but don't see why the cops are useless. If there isn't any evidence then there isn't any no matter how much you wish there was.
No doubt though someone will have seen it and decided to keep quiet, this is the person you should be directing your frustration at. Those who keep stum about things like this really do get on my wick.
